Oil prices near $146 on threat of Iran conflict - USATODAY.com 0

Oil prices near $146 on threat of Iran conflict - USATODAY.com

ahmadinejad.jpg“Oil prices neared $146 a barrel Thursday for the first time ever on reports of declining U.S. stockpiles and the threat of conflict with Iran.
Comments by Saudi Arabia’s oil minister suggesting his country had no immediate plans to boost production also lifted prices.

Expectations that the European Central Bank will raise interest rates later Thursday could further weaken the U.S. dollar and drive oil prices even higher, as investors turn to commodities as a hedge against a falling greenback, traders said.

By midday in Europe, light, sweet crude for August delivery rose $2.28 to a record $145.85 a barrel in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange.”

Ubah Gaya Hidup you can take advantage in BAD economy. 3

We get the message “Ubah Gaya Hidup”, everything just hike up when fuel price increased. House is getting more expensive, stocks market is unstable, banks may increase interest rates. Political drama keep going on and economy isn’t getting better, our country is in a mess. It seems like we had no idea what’s gonna happen next.

Despite all the negativity that kept pouring in, “Ubah Gaya Hidup” living better for less seems impossible to be truth. In other perspective, a tough time could means a good time to make a difference in your life, a positive change.

How to take advantage in a bad economy?
Many of us are trimming their expenses and going out less, many has cancelled their yearly vacations from their to-do-list, you can utilize this time around to go travel with smaller crowds, MATTA Fair is just around the corner, visit and grab the cheapest package as fast as you can.

frugality

Invest, if you have money in your bank account, this would be a buyer paradise to invest in real estate, there may be many houses out for “lelong” and you can get a good location due to many empty lots available. Another opportunity would be starting your business, a great time to serve the market who would like to spend less for more, or perhaps look for a market that has the most number of businesses closing down and start building the root from there by researching the reason and find the solutions to cater for the market needs this time around.

Start a blog and earn money as people would be spending more at home surfing the internet looking for information and ideas to improve their life, aims for something that people would like to read such as money, entertainment, personal development and daily solutions method.

If worst come to worst, you can take this opportunity to explore working abroad where currency is much stronger. If you really have too many expenses you can’t cope and in bad shape due bad economy, this could be a good idea to think about.

After all, economy wouldn’t be bad all the times, we can make use of the bad times to learn and the good time to save so that we can handle it in future. “Ubah Gaya Hidup” to kicks the bad habits out and cultivate good one.

P. Diddy Cries About High Gas Prices (because his private jet flights are too expensive) 10

Did anyone see P. Diddy’s recent YouTube Video in which he whines about high gas prices? It seems he can’t afford to spend the money to fuel his private jet for round trip flights between LA and NY.

Diddy says 2 round trip flights cost him about $250,000, so he needs to fly commercial on American Airlines. He also said he was flying coach, but when he sat down it sure looked like it was in a first class leather seat.

Here is a short excerpt:

“I’m actually flying commercial. That’s how high gas prices are. I’m at the gate right now. This is really happening, proof gas prices are too high. Tell whoever the next president is we need to bring gas prices down.”

Yes, he said, “This is really happening.” (As though he were above everyone else). He went on to plead to his “Saudi Arabian brothers and sisters” to send him some free gas so he can fly his private jet.

In any case, I can’t feel sorry for you Diddy. You earned an estimated $35 million last year, or almost 700 times what the median US houshold income in 2007 ($50,233). How are we supposed to feel sorry for you?

Here is P. Diddy in all his glory. (note: language not suitable for a workplace environment)

What do you think about this? I’d love to read your comments.

Vodafone to invest $2bn this year 0

Source - The Telegraph, Kolkata, India

OUR SPECIAL CORRESPONDENT

Mumbai, June 15: Vodafone Group Plc, which now holds a controlling stake in Hutchison Essar Ltd, is planning to invest $2 billion this year into the business even as it expects the cellular operator to add 1.5 million customers every month, Vodafone CEO Arun Sarin said today.

Sarin was in Mumbai today to attend the first meeting of the new Hutch Essar board. Hutch Essar will soon be named Vodafone Essar and the Hutch brand will also be replaced shortly.

Sarin said after the board meeting that the process of integrating Vodafone and Hutch Essar would be completed by September. He said more investments would flow in depending on the progress that the Indian entity made.

The company’s board has 12 members, four from Essar and eight from Vodafone, including two independent directors. Ravi Ruia is the chairman of the board and Arun Sarin its vice-chairman. Asim Ghosh is the managing director.

Sarin said no date had been set for the change of the brand name. “But it will happen. The next time you come here, you will see the Vodafone name,” he added. He said he was negotiating with other mobile service providers in the country on the possibility of sharing infrastructure like towers.

“We are interested in setting up a platform with whoever wants to join us so that we can build our network in India in a cost-effective manner,” he said. Vodafone has already announced network sharing plans with Bharti Airtel Ltd.

Chicago can go Green with IT 0

Chicago proposes to become one of the Greenest cities in the world. Meanwhile, we’ve been in a holding pattern with respect to addressing the digital divide let along promoting digital excellence citywide. Chicago’s Digital Access Alliance placed environmentalism among the core platform. we need to be innovative with regard to green IT. It’s not just recycling and refurbishing. There’s some interesting thinking up in Canada. Here’s a set of links:

http://green-broadband.blogspot.com/

http://free-fiber-to-the-home.blogspot.com/

I’m thinking ahead for a moment. Knowledge workers could more readily work from home with reliable high speed communications networks, allowing audio/video, shared desktops, multimedia conference calling… and any number of undeveloped applications. None of this is new. What would be new would be commitment to network capacity and workforce policies that encouraged this. Instead we’re looking at the networks as a consumption driven amenity, and even there the public doesn’t get much bandwidth bang (or reliability) for the buck.

Think also what we’d be doing for neighborhood economies if more people worked locally?

Medford Businesses Go Green 2

Medford’s Green Streets Initiative

- Allison Goldsberry

Cars are out, and walking and biking are in; at least as far as the Medford Chamber of Commerce is concerned.

The Chamber, taking its cue from neighbors Somerville and Cambridge, has started a Green Streets initiative to promote Medford’s businesses and clean energy.

The goal is to get increased foot-traffic (literally) into businesses that have agreed to offer discounts or raffle prizes to customers who can show they biked, walked, or took public transportation to get there. The only proof needed is a bike helmet, pair of sneakers, Charlie card, or even just a green piece of clothing. Sweat and shortness of breath are optional.

Chamber Executive Director Cheryl White said the business community response so far has been slow, with only a handful of businesses on board. White expects that to change once Board member Mary Sbuttoni and White hit the pavement in key business districts within walking and biking distance of residential neighborhoods, such as Salem Street, Medford Square, the Hillside, and West Medford Square.

Sbuttoni, who initially brought the idea to the table after hearing about it in Somerville, is excited about the potential for good PR for businesses as well as promoting clean energy and physical fitness on behalf of the consumer.

“It’s kinda nice because it promotes the businesses…people might think these businesses are doing a good thing,” said Sbuttoni.

Environmentally-conscious consumers looking to cash-in on their green attitude can find participating businesses on the Chamber’s website or www.gogreenstreets.org, or can just look for the green sign in the window.

Participating businesses so far include Ward’s Gifts, Riverside Wrap, Medford Muscular Therapy Center, Rainbow Solutions, and Rhona’s Hairport. Interested businesses should email the Chamber at director@medfordchamberma.com or call 781-396-1277.

Sleeper Cell 0

I’m pretty sure a sleeper cell has nothing to do with this post. In fact I’m positive other than I did not sleep last night as my mind ran through worst case scenarios for a major software release today. Hooray for butterflies!

Since posting about a month ago about stinking on keeping track of money I’ve been using Mint.com. Yup, I’m using an online service. So far I’m not thrilled with where we’re at and what we have to do to get where we need to be. That’s rather blunt, but the financial news just seems to be pouring in about how banks are on the fritz, my home loan is going to cause my pants to explode, and how Warren Buffet is sad about the economy but generally not personally worried that he’ll lose all of his tens of billions.

I’ve also started a quick & dirty coffee blog with a couple friends (if you would like to join and write about coffees you’re enjoying/trying, shoot me an email. You can read about my first of six beans that I’m roasting from the latest order here.

As for the Watch My Money Maker Weekly podcast I need to get on that. I’ve got 100 excuses, all of which end in, “but I just didn’t make it a priority.” So since this weekend I’ll be out of town and solo I may have time since I don’t tend to sleep a lot on trips like this. Sleep is over-rated any way.
